About me

My name is Marie Lisa Kogler and I am a researcher in the field of systems science, currently working at the Institute of Environmental Systems Science at the University of Graz. My research focus is on applied computational modeling and methods, drawing on a broad background in various disciplines such as mathematics, physics, computer science and environmental science.

In my research, I am dedicated to analyzing complex systems in order to identify patterns and relationships and make data-driven decisions. I am particularly interested in investigating environmentally relevant decisions and their effects at an individual and societal level. This includes my work on the dissemination of opinions and anxieties about climate change and the calculation and forecasting of flight emissions in connection with leisure and business travel. I also conduct research on the acceptance of political measures in the field of green mobility.

I am currently leading various projects, including the project REASON - Responses to threat- and solution-oriented climate news (FWF, since 2024) as project leader and the project TRANSFLIGHT - Shaping the future of air travel (ACRP, since 2021) as leader of a work package on flight emissions.

I am also passionate about making science accessible to a wider audience and strive to present the results of my work in an understandable way. As an ARQUS Ambassador, I am particularly committed to the topic of Open Science.

Awards & Scholarships

In 2020, I received the Award of Excellence for best dissertations of the academic year 2020, awarded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) for my work on collective behavior in complex social structures with application in the dissemination of anxiety and opinions on climate change, among other things.

I was also very grateful to be nominated by students for the Teaching Awards “Teaching: Excellent!” and “Digital Teaching” in 2020/21.

During my dissertation, I was the recipient of three competitively awarded scholarships, which gave me a lot of recognition at an early stage of my research.
